Spring 2010 CS/AMP Retreat Luncheon

The Computing Sciences and Alliance for Minority Participation undergraduate research program will be hosting the Spring 2010 CS/AMP Retreat Luncheon.  The event will focus on Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), as well as International Experiences.  We will also present a new point system to encourage students to be more active as a research fellow.

This event is mandatory for CS/AMP students.  Faculty mentors are encouraged to attend.  Please join us for great food as we support and prepare the CS/AMP undergraduate fellows for a year of successful research.

Additionally, Spring 2010 CS/AMP contracts must be signed and returned to Lori Vela in CI 334 by January 13, 2010.

CS, Engineering, Math: 2010 Internships and Research Experiences

Announcing Paid Internships and Summer Research Experiences

FOR:  Undergraduates, Graduates, & Faculty

ORISE administers many programs that provides paid educational and research experiences and have eligibility requirements that vary from program to program.  Students or faculty will need to go to the following link(s) and select the program that interests them.  Each program’s web page has instructions on eligibility requirements, application submission, and a link to the online application or a printable application.  All ORISE programs require applicants to submit the appropriate application and supporting documentation.  The program’s web page also provides the name and e-mail address of a program specialist who can help answer any questions that students may have concerning eligibility requirements or submitting an application for a particular program.  When e-mailing questions to the program specialist the program name should be included in the e-mail.  When students choose a program that interests them, they will need to CAREFULLY read the eligibility requirements.  Many of the programs administered by ORISE are open only to U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens.

http://www.orau.gov/hereatornl – This web page is for the Higher Education Research Experiences at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (HERE). The program has an online application.  Deadlines are stated but they are flexible for the HERE program.  There are multiple academic levels in the HERE program, i.e., entering freshman, undergraduate, post-BS, a graduate student or a faculty member.

http://www.scied.science.doe.gov/ – The students will find information about the Department of Energy’s Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) as well as an electronic application which can complete online.  The SULI program is for undergraduates and graduating seniors.  At this site students can also find applications for the Community College Institute (CCI) and the Pre-Service Teacher (PST) programs.

http://www.ornl.gov/sci/nuclear_science_technology/nstip/nesls.htm – The Nuclear Engineering Student Laboratory Synthesis (NESLS) program is a cooperative research initiative geared toward students working in physics and nuclear engineering applications.  Through one- to three-year summer internships, NESLS offers engineering student on-the-job educational and research opportunities at a multidisciplinary national laboratory.

http://see.orau.org/ – This link is the gateway to many of the education and research experiences offered through ORISE.  The web page has links for faculty, recent graduates, graduates, and undergraduate students.

Engineering, CS, Math: $5,000 stipend & more…

The Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University would like to invite students from your program to apply to the Undergraduate Summer Research Grant (USRG) program.  This program is modeled after the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), but funded by the College.  USRG students and REU students from engineering and the university interact at various events.

The program description and application can be found at http://essap.tamu.edu/usrg.  We encourage your students to apply soon as the deadline is Wednesday, February 3, 2010.

During this summer research experience, participants work closely with faculty members and graduate students on current research projects, attend development and GRE workshops, make a formal poster presentation of their research experience, and submit a final written report describing the results of their research.  Students may not enroll in additional courses for the summer sessions.

To participate in the program, students should have:
1. Interest in and a desire to actively participate in ongoing research projects
2. Minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA
3. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (international students may apply only if currently enrolled at TAMU)
4. Major in engineering or related science or math curriculum (e.g., physics, chemistry, etc.)
5. Completed sophomore year (at least 60 hours) by the end of Spring 2010
6. Plan to graduate no sooner than December 2010
7. Interest in attending graduate school

Funding: Each participant will receive a $5,000 grant for support during the ten weeks.  The program will also pay tuition and fees for one credit hour of a required independent study/research; provide housing (or housing allowance); and pay up to $400 for travel expenses for non-TAMU participants.

If you or your students have any questions about the program or application process, please contact:
Matthew Pariyothorn at mattp@tamu.edu or 979-845-7200.
