Nicole Aston – Our Far East Adventurer!

One of our CS/AMP undergraduate research fellows has been featured by the university as an Outstanding Islander!  She is currently in China at an international experience for the Fall semester.

profile_astonWhen Nicole Aston moved to the Island University campus housing in fall 2006 she found a lasting friendship. Her then roommate, a Chinese international student, shared customs and sparked an interest in Aston to visit China.

Nearly three years later, the junior biomedical sciences major is living in Beijing through December as she studies the Mandarin language, Beijing history, and participates in a medical/health internship. This summer, she’ll stay in a dorm, but in the fall, she’ll live with a family. The San Angelo, Texas, native is the first University student to receive the National Security Education Program’s Boren Scholarship and was provided the resources for the opportunity through the Study Abroad Program. Prior to traveling to China, Aston, a member of Beta Beta Beta, the National Biological Honors Society, took two semesters of basic Mandarin at the Corpus Christi Chinese School.

Boren Scholarships focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security and provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests.

Before Aston left for China, she was a tutor for the 21st Century After School Program at Hamlin Middle School and worked in the Department of Life Sciences media prep lab. Her sister, Tiffany, is a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi graduate.

Congratulations Nicole and we look forward to your return in Spring 2009!
